Teaching Philosophy
I have two main teaching philosophies. The first and most important is to keep students active and engaged. In my classroom, all my students are researchers, active participants, and learners all-in-one. For example, when teaching about markets in Principles of Microeconomics, I place the students in active roles as buyers and sellers and guide them through a simulation to produce real-time supply and demand curves. Using the resulting behavior from the market, we go through how to interpret and understand the data together. When I teach Experimental or Behavioral Economics, I plan to take students through an experiment to expose them to academic research - keeping them active and engaged. I believe that teaching through active decision exercises is the best way to increase retention of the material. My second philosophy is to provide students with the application of economics by employing examples of current events. For example, we studied the positive and negative behavioral impacts of the recent COVID-19 pandemic on the technology sector and the airline industry. Specifically, we examined the disruptions it had on almost every market's supply chain that continue to linger to this day. If I were to teach Sports Economics or Game Theory, I would touch on how the strategies and equilibria concepts are enjoyed in today’s games and contests. By showing students the practical impact of economic analysis, I hope to add value to my classroom through empirical examples and contemporary events.
Although I enjoy lecturing in subjects I have already taught, I would embrace the opportunity to diversify my teaching portfolio by teaching new courses. I plan to teach lectures with applied microeconomics to enhance my teaching through practical examples. Applied microeconomics would allow me to use empirical data in the classroom, showing students how economics is all around them. In addition to the classes for which I have been the instructor of record, I am prepared to teach Experimental Economics, Sports Economics, Behavioral Economics, Game Theory, Introductory Statistics, Econometrics, and PhD Microeconomic Theory. I have enjoyed developing these philosophies in the classroom, but I believe there is more to learn and I plan to continue teaching to refine my methodologies.
